After reading brief descriptions of astrology signs, figure out what sign you think the main character of your book was born under. Explain why you think they fit the traits of this sign, drawing on specific examples of their actions, attitudes and thoughts throughout the book.

  • I think Winston Smith was born between January 20 to February 18 as he seems to be an Aquarius. Aquarius are known for their intelligent, rebellious, humanitarian, independant and progressive nature and their strong sense of justice. I think the very reason why Winston was chosen as the main character was because of the fact that he is a very individualistic person who values freedom a lot and whose biggest struggle in the book is to suppress his thoughts of rebellion and revolution that he has about the party which, naturally, creates conflict. This is evident by the fact that he bought a diary (which is considered somewhat of a thoughtcrime itself in the book, and it is considered the moment where he put his thoughts into action) and the first time he wrote in the diary, he started with writing about his day and ended with a page of “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER.” During his interrogation, Winston was called a difficult case since he kept refusing what O’Brian told him to believe even though he was getting tortured psychologically and physically, which is an example of his rebellious nature. Additionally, similar to an Aquarius and unlike many others in the story, even those who have similar ideas as Winston, such as Julia, Winston displays critical thinking, nonconformity, sense of justice and curiosity since he challenges the party’s propaganda and seeks the truth by joining Brotherhood keeping track of the wars Oceania has been in war with, and his fixation on a paper from a ten-year-old news item, which depicts a photograph of executed Party leaders Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford in an event in New York, even though all three men confessed to being in Eurasia at the time the photograph was taken. Therefore, the traits and characteristics associated with Aquarius do seem to align with Winston Smith's character in 1984.
